Travel Log| Picking Strawberries at Polkadraai Farm (Stellenbosch)

Friday 10 January 2014  at 5:59 pm
Afternoon!

While I was in home-town, the family decided that it would be a good idea to pick strawberries! We couldn't find the restaurant we were in search for and kept getting lost, so we picked strawberries along the way *laughs*. At first I wasn't too keen about picking strawberries, because for one, it was extremely hot that day and it was packed to the max with eager strawberry pickers! But it was all worth it! The taste and scent of freshly picked strawberries is priceless! I hate store bought strawberries now, because they're sour and hard. The strawberries on the farm were soft, smelled like a strawberry and tasted like strawberry juice they were so sweet, it was heaven on earth! The only drawback was, you had to pay R3::$0.28 which isn't expensive but it worked on a weighing system (I generally hate weighing systems). The family ended up paying R100::$9.29 for a good 3kg::6.6lbs of strawberries. It was well worth it! I hope you enjoy the pictures!

Pick and pick and pick....

and pick and pick and pick!

  3. WOW THE SKY IS SO BLUE AND THE GREENS ARE SO VIBRANT! I totally envy you right now, I wish I could frolic through strawberry fields but alas, everything's frozen here :C But thank you for bringing some warmth into my cold day with your pictures. It looks like a lot of fun! I would definitely want to try it one day (if only I wasn't that scared of caterpillars, they're my number 1 phobia and I bet there are some crawling in that field haha)! You look so happy holding that huge basket of strawberries! 9$ for 3kg is quite a good deal : D You'll have strawberries for ages!

    1. Ahaha, I'm glad I could bring some warmth to your cold day! But honestly, it's so hot down here it sucks, I can't wait for Winter! :) Surprisingly where I picked there were no caterpillars a lot of flying insects but no caterpillars. I hate caterpillars too! Lol, we had so much strawberries we ended up giving some to the extended family

I've been strawberry picking before, but that was when I was really young. xD Definitely would love to go again (though I'd probably wear pants, since from what I remember, the bushes poked at my legs a lot).

    1. You're totally right Jun, because I've never been strawberry picking before and this was a spur of the moment thing, I didn't dress for the occasion. Pants definitely would have saved me from getting my legs mauled by the bushes XD
